Program Overview

Background

The San Diego County Office of Education, in partnership with California State University, San Marcos, University of San Diego, and local school districts have been awarded a Teaching American History Grant designed to provide a comprehensive content-based program of professional development for 5th, 8th, and 11th grade history-social science teachers in San Diego County. This program has been designed to increase teacher content knowledge, improve instructional pedagogy, create and sustain a professional network of teachers, and improve student achievement in schools/districts identified for program improvement. The American History in the Schools professional development program consists of a 10-day summer institute with tiered program options.

All Teachers Receive

• A tiered program approach
• Engaging content presentations by CSUSM and USD faculty historians
• Interactive application sessions designed to improve instructional practice
• A stipend per teacher, substitute reimbursements to districts and university credits.
